Dr Richard Gorrod joins as trustee

We are delighted to welcome Richard to the board of trustees. He brings with him a unique set of skills and experiences both as a GP of over 20 years experience and a survivor of serious mental illness. He is passionate about mental wellbeing in the emergency services and regularly speaks to both trainee and experienced practitioners. Himself a fully trained hostage and crisis negotiator, he speaks at every UK National Hostage Negotiation course about mental illness and self-care. He brings a very powerful message, that if it can happen to him, it can happen to anyone. We are excited that he has chosen to continue his important work through the BLSO.

Richard Gorrod is a 57-year-old doctor who has worked at the coalface of patient care for 32 years. He qualified at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in London and has been a GP in Norfolk for over 20 years. He has also been training director for Norfolk Accident Rescue Service and a Surgeon Lt Cdr in the Royal Naval Reserve both for many years. He worked in a 15000 patient practice.  In 2014 he became very ill with depression which knocked him for six for a few years and necessitated him being a Psychiatric Inpatient for over 4 months! Severely depressed and suicidal for 3-4 years in total. It had a devastating effect on him and his family.

Now passionate about improving mental health care, he regularly lectures to doctors, medical students at the UEA and University of Cambridge, paramedics, physician associates, other healthcare workers and the general public.

He is a fully trained Police Hostage and Crisis Negotiator lecturing to the police nationally.

His particular interests are Suicide Prevention, self-care and the better integration of physical and mental health.

He is married with three children, two dogs, three cats, fourteen Norfolk Grey chickens and fifteen Indian Runner ducks. Loves football (Norwich City Season Ticket holder) and rugby and plays the saxophone (badly).

Blue Light Symphony Orchestra awarded £10,000 funding for mental health support

06 October 2020 - Blue Light Symphony Orchestra (BLSO), the UK's only orchestra for all emergency services personnel, has been awarded £10,000 funding from the Coronavirus Community Support Fund, distributed by The National Lottery Community Fund.

Covid-19 has given rise to an increase in mental health problems, not only in the general public, but also emergency service workers who are experiencing exceptionally increased levels of stress and anxiety.

First responders need access to timely and relevant intervention but for many, finding words to express and process their emotions is difficult and the funding will be used to provide music therapy to overcome mental health issues.

A feasibility pilot project, in partnership with Surrey Police and Sussex Police, Surrey Fire and Rescue Service and East Sussex Fire and Rescue will be delivered by Chroma, the UK’s leading national provider of arts therapies services.

Research shows that music can significantly improve psychological health and wellbeing as it engages the neurochemical systems responsible for reward, motivation, pleasure, and stress. However, music therapy is not routinely offered to emergency workers as part of the support that enables them to deal with the traumatic events and situations they deal with each day.

Seb Valentine, a Detective Sergeant in the Surrey Police Safeguarding Investigation Unit based in Guildford and founder of the Blue Light Symphony Orchestra, said: “This funding is vital and will enable us to deliver ground breaking music therapy sessions initially in Surrey and Sussex. This project will provide 12 weeks of group music therapy, delivered by Chroma music therapists, to 24 police officers, firefighters and staff suffering from symptoms of PTSD, stress or anxiety.”

“This is the first step in developing the world’s first programme of music therapy designed specifically to reduce these symptoms in emergency workers.”

Daniel Thomas, joint managing director of Chroma said “We are delighted to be a part of this project, which could be the stepping-stone to providing consistent, effective therapy for all frontline staff. The work they do on a day-to-day basis is invaluable to society and in running this pilot scheme, we can begin to support them, long-term, as and when they require.”

In the summer, Blue Light Symphony Orchestra held a 999Run raising over £1,000 to further their aim of improving mental wellbeing in the emergency services through music.

BLSO to perform at Ambulance Leadership Forum 2023

The BLSO is excited to be sending a trio of musicians to provide music at the Ambulance Leadership Forum 2023 at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, Wales. We will help guests to relax at a reception in the evening of 2nd October, whilst showcasing the musical talents of UK emergency services personnel. This is an excellent opportunity for us to meet the UK Ambulance leadership community and let them know about the great work we do to support their colleagues through music. The opportunity to build personal relationships with colleagues at events like this is so valuable to us and we thank the organisers for inviting us. We look forward to meeting you if you are attending!
