BLSO Board members Seb Valentine & Amanda Thorpe publish paper on the benefits Music Therapy for emergency service workers

The Blue Light Symphony Orchestra (BLSO) is thrilled to announce the publication of a pioneering paper co-authored by Amanda Thorpe and Seb Valentine, exploring the profound impact of music on emotional resilience and self-regulation among emergency services personnel.

After two years of dedicated research, this work—supported by Daniel Thomas at Chroma and Dan Gillard at Surrey Police, Sussex Police, Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, and East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service occupational health—highlights the transformative role that music can play in supporting those on the front lines.

This publication marks a significant step forward in demonstrating how musical interventions can enhance well-being in high-pressure professions. We hope it serves as a springboard for expanding our work within emergency service communities.

To learn more about how we can support firefighters, ambulance staff, and police officers in your area, please get in touch.

From Opera to Order: Seb Valentine’s Journey in Music and Policing

In the world of orchestral music, leadership and precision are essential—qualities that also define the work of a dedicated police officer. Few embody this unique intersection quite like Seb Valentine, whose extraordinary career has seen him move from the stage of the Royal College of Music to the front lines of law enforcement.

Seb’s journey is one of transformation, sparked by a shift in focus during his university years. Initially drawn to physics, he ultimately embraced his musical talent, studying singing at one of the world’s most prestigious conservatories. Yet the unpredictable nature of the freelance opera world led him to seek out a more structured role—one that would still allow him to make a meaningful impact.

Since joining the Surrey Police in 2011, Seb has worn many hats, from detective sergeant specializing in domestic abuse cases to his current role as a staff officer for the chief constable, where he gains rare insights into leadership and organizational management. But music has never been far from his heart. Rather than leaving his passion behind, Seb has found new ways to blend his artistic and policing worlds through his work with the Blue Light Symphony Orchestra, a charity dedicated to supporting emergency service personnel through music.

His initiative has fostered a musical community within policing, providing police officers and emergency responders with a creative outlet that accommodates their demanding schedules. Seb draws direct parallels between conducting an orchestra and leading a team in law enforcement—both require strategic direction, attention management, and a deep understanding of human dynamics. The therapeutic potential of music is also a key focus, with his charity aiming to offer relief and camaraderie for those navigating the pressures of emergency service roles.

Seb’s inspiring journey—and the lessons he has learned along the way—are explored in depth in a recent podcast episode, where he shares his experiences balancing two deeply demanding yet rewarding careers. The conversation highlights how music and leadership intertwine, shaping his approach to both conducting and policing.

For those who believe in the transformative power of music, Seb’s story is a testament to its ability to connect, heal, and lead. Don’t miss this compelling discussion that shines a light on the unique relationship between orchestral artistry and police leadership.

Blue Light Symphony Orchestra awarded £10,000 funding for mental health support

06 October 2020 - Blue Light Symphony Orchestra (BLSO), the UK's only orchestra for all emergency services personnel, has been awarded £10,000 funding from the Coronavirus Community Support Fund, distributed by The National Lottery Community Fund.

Covid-19 has given rise to an increase in mental health problems, not only in the general public, but also emergency service workers who are experiencing exceptionally increased levels of stress and anxiety.

First responders need access to timely and relevant intervention but for many, finding words to express and process their emotions is difficult and the funding will be used to provide music therapy to overcome mental health issues.

A feasibility pilot project, in partnership with Surrey Police and Sussex Police, Surrey Fire and Rescue Service and East Sussex Fire and Rescue will be delivered by Chroma, the UK’s leading national provider of arts therapies services.

Research shows that music can significantly improve psychological health and wellbeing as it engages the neurochemical systems responsible for reward, motivation, pleasure, and stress. However, music therapy is not routinely offered to emergency workers as part of the support that enables them to deal with the traumatic events and situations they deal with each day.

Seb Valentine, a Detective Sergeant in the Surrey Police Safeguarding Investigation Unit based in Guildford and founder of the Blue Light Symphony Orchestra, said: “This funding is vital and will enable us to deliver ground breaking music therapy sessions initially in Surrey and Sussex. This project will provide 12 weeks of group music therapy, delivered by Chroma music therapists, to 24 police officers, firefighters and staff suffering from symptoms of PTSD, stress or anxiety.”

“This is the first step in developing the world’s first programme of music therapy designed specifically to reduce these symptoms in emergency workers.”

Daniel Thomas, joint managing director of Chroma said “We are delighted to be a part of this project, which could be the stepping-stone to providing consistent, effective therapy for all frontline staff. The work they do on a day-to-day basis is invaluable to society and in running this pilot scheme, we can begin to support them, long-term, as and when they require.”

In the summer, Blue Light Symphony Orchestra held a 999Run raising over £1,000 to further their aim of improving mental wellbeing in the emergency services through music.
